Can We Find Fiction In Our Life Stories?

This month, I'm reading The Memory Keeper's Daughter by Kim Edwards. (Kim Edwards)

Perhaps, you have seen the TV movie with Dermot Mulroney. If not, I would highly recommend renting or buying a copy.

No, it's not an autobiography, but elements of it are mirrored in our own lives.

We think we are incapable of delving as low as the father (David Henry) did in Ms Edwards story, but, yet, if we look closely, we might find a piece or two of him buried in our own souls.

If not, we certainly might imagine ourselves to be the divine redeemer Caroline (Dr. Henry's nurse) was for Phoebe (Henry's daughter with Down Syndrome).

Regardless, I would think we might find traces of regret and redemption in our own lives drawn in and through this fictional story by Ms Edwards.

Too, remember, it is advantageous to be an avid reader of many genres as it will serve to improve our own writing.

Writing Idea:

Have you every been abandoned by anyone? Or maybe you were the one who abandoned someone or something. Perhaps, you know of someone who has or was abandoned.

  • Begin your draft.
  • Describe your feelings using your senses.
  • Tell the reader who, what, when, where, why, and how.
  • Step away from your writing for a few hours or a day.
  • Return with a fresh mind.
  • Add or delete anything that seems to bog down what you are tyring to convey.
  • Have a trusted friend to read and give you pointers.
  • Review and decide if this is your final copy.
  • Most of all, enjoy what you have learned about yourself while penning this heart-felt piece.

Act Like A Lady, Think Like A Man!

Currently, I'm reading Act Like A Lady, Think Like A Man by Steve Harvey.

Some of you may remember Steve Harvey from various films like The Fighting Temptations. He keeps you smiling. My hub cracks up laughing at Mr. Harvey's wit no matter how many times we watch that movie.

So obviously, he brings his keen and unique sense of humor onto/into the pages of this fun read. Accompanied with it is a sense of realness and sincerity. What more could you ask as a reader?

Remember how we have talked about humor playing a serious role in writing well? Well, Mr. Harvey is an excellent example for us in learning how to write something that grabs the attention of the audience.

Check these out on Amazon.com!

While this is not an autobiography, Mr. Harvey clearly shares his thoughts and snapshots of his personal life. So in some ways, there is an autobiographical sense to it. Perhaps, it's autobiographical "license".

I do enjoy sharing non-fiction books with you besides autos. And most of you have made it clear that you want a spectrum of choices in book suggestions.

So this is a freebie! Enjoy. At least take a look "inside" the book on Amazon. Remember your local library gives you great opportunity to read without your credit card. Minus the gasoline it took you to get there! Can you believe the prices?

Which makes for a good lead into an intriguing story: I Remember When Gasoline Was $.25 a Gallon. Well, some of you barely made it into the 20th century, so you won't be able to relate. Why not write a story about the time you ran out of gasoline. Or the time you were late for some grand event because someone else ran out of gasoline! Or the story you told your parents about why you were late getting home. Uh huh. Or was that the flat tire excuse?

Well, how did we get on this subject? I think it's called brain storming, which comes with my "package"!

Happy 50, Barbie!

Happy 50, Barbie! For more on this, please go to my Pilates/Health blog at www.pilatesworks4life.com!!!

Book and Author of the Month!
What I want to highlight here is the biography written about Barbie's "mom", Ruth Handler. The title is Barbie and Ruth The Story of the World’s Most Famous Doll and the Woman Who Created Her by author, Robin Gerber, Published by Collins Business, an imprint of Harper Collins Publishers, 2009.

I have not read all of Ms Gerber's book, but am on my way! Let me know what you think!!!!

For an AARP interview with Ms Gerber, click here!

The 50 year old Barbie photo was designed by a Brazilian artist. He was creating what he thought she might look like had she aged naturally, according to AARP (3/2009)

Amazon Books carries this book.

The Anatomy of an Author!

Needing to be more advanced on how the body works, we took off yesterday to the Dallas Museum of Arts to hear award winning author David Macaulay.

Of course, you know my mind was ready to dive into the anatomy of David Macaulay. Well, not exactly. The anatomy of his book.

Mom, on the other hand was there with her age old curiosity ready to pounce into Macaulay's lecture.

Fortunately, they actually had headphones that worked for her!!! And naturally, we started out with the vol. on "high". Until Mom bellowed out in a sea of quiet (the lecture in process), "That's TOO LOUD!!!!"

Heads turned, including ours as we pretended we didn't know who that ill mannered woman was. Of course, I'm joshing.

With Mouths Open
The lecture began and Mom sat there with her usual stance: her mouth hanging open. I don't know how much of it she retained, but I'm sure more than we did.
Did I mention Macauley is a genius? To say the least. He's amazing, at 62. Brilliant. Some say majestic, to which he chuckles in disbelief. For sure, he is unpretentiously humble. Refreshing.

He is also a winner of the 1991 Caldecott award (Black and White), along with many other prestigious invitations. How I remember Caldecott. I had to read all of them when I was in my undergrad program. In no way am I saying I agree with all the views of Caldecott or the medal award winning books. But some of them are worth taking a gander into.
Face-2-Face Anatomy
As you can see, we landed in the book-signing lane. Mr. Macauley was as delightful in person as he was at a distance.

I mentioned to him that I had great respect for what he had accomplished with his book, The Way We Work: Getting to Know the Amazing Human Body, because of my anatomy work in Pilates. His eyes deepened in thought as he turned to meet mine and said, "You know, I was told when researching for this book that I should learn Pilates, but I just didn't have the time." He encouraged me as he concluded, "But I know Pilates is an amazing way to learn about your body."

I couldn't escape recommending he choose a qualified Pilates instructor! With an educated certainty, he agreed. See you in the studio, David!!!

Then we were off to Mom's fave place: that would be any restaurant where there is food.
While there we not only had great food, but great entertainment: In the bathroom.

More on that another post...coming up soon!

Check out the website above for more info on Mr. Macaulay and Caldecott Books. I think you will find them both interesting, if nothing else.

NOTE: Article on Macaulay in Dallas Morning News (01/25/09); click on names above for webites on Caldecott and Macaulay.

The Amazing, Jackie Chan

Jackie Chan, Author and Autobio of the Week! Reading his book has truly been an inspiration. He digs deep into the soul of a matter while finding humor along the way. A nice blend.

If you want to know more about what makes Jackie tirelessly weather through scene after scene without doubles in his movies, this is the book for you.
He takes the reader back to his childhood when he suffered much emotionally, mentally, and physically. Yet, he quickly brings into focus the value of these involuntary chapters of his life.

I might be "reading" him the wrong way, but it seems to me that he's someone I would enjoy sharing a moment with. He exudes the passion of life.
TITLE: I Am Jackie Chan You can purchase it at Amazon, Half Price Books, or ck it out at your local library!

Down Home Author Cooks Up A Book!

This book and author are on my fav list. And it's not just because the author is my dearest sis-in-law of a lot of years...like over 30! Charity Faye.

The title of her book as you may see is
Apples, Pumpkin, Popcorn, and Peanut Butter... And Other Fall Favorites From Aunt Charity's Big House On The Prairie.
I believe this was written around 1991.

The introduction page began with Charity writing that I (Ellen) saw where someone had written stories with their recipes as a backdrop. And since she had a love for cookin' out on the KS Prairie, why didn't she put her hand to the pen to the paper?

Soon thereafter she and her daughter, Becki, came down to visit. Along with them came this lovely book filled with family recipes, each draped with a story. How I loved it. And I've used it in some capacity ever since. Whether in the days gone by when I was in craft shows across the DFW area or in the last 10 years in my writing workshop.

Here's a sample of its contents:

Grandma's Corn Bread

Grandma didn't cook by measurements, so I had to hold the measuring cup under the flour sifter while she helped me get this recipe!

(I'll leave the recipe out. Email me if you would like to have it! It does look yummmy!)

Charity concluded with...

The first time I took Charles to "meet the family", we went to Grandma's house for the big family Christmas dinner. The table truly groaned under the bountiful variety of holiday fare. Charles ate a slice of ham and Grandma's corn bread with a glass of milk. He was happy, and I was in shock! Grandma said, "You leave him alone! He's got just what he wants." We have been married 22 years and Charles is still delighted with "just corn bread and milk." He tells me it's almost as good as Grandma's.

Well, Charles and Charity have been married a few more years since then, and he's still munching down on cornbread and milk. Now I bet Charles would tell you that Charity's cornbread is indeed better than Grandma's.

But isn't this a novel way of writing your life story? Cooking could be the theme of your autobiography! Now, I'm not suggesting this for people who do not like to cook. However, it's always fun to write at least one of your stories centered around a recipe or family meal.

I don't know about you, but this has inspired me to write a few more stories of my own around a great meal. This makes me hungry. See you at the table!

PHOTO: Picture of book at top, and picture of "Aunt Charity" in her mom's kitchen, where many a meal was shared and devoured, I might add!

Check Out This Author!

The newest edition to the blog: highlighting a different author a couple of times a month. What do you think? I knew you would agree.

What better way to launch this new feature than to begin with a friend. Donalyn Powell Parker. Just recently I was afforded the opportunity to spend personal time with Donalyn in her Southern Living home!
And what a beautiful home. With a beautiful family.

How did we meet? Our parents were friends forever ago. Say 50 plus years. Wow! My dad was their pastor and friend. Donalyn and I met for the first time just weeks ago. What a pleasure and blessing. It took us forever to find out about each other, but once we did, we immediately connected. First via email, then in person.

She might tell you that I had plenty of questions about how she got into writing. I love details, and I couldn't get enough from her. I could have listened for hours. She was very gracious in sharing how she came to be a published author. Quite an amazing story, I might add. I loved every minute of it. The only downside was that we didn't have more time.

I was fascinated to find that she didn't start out as an aspiring writer. Amazing. She just felt God leading her to "write", and she obeyed. In no time she was published. Did I say amazing?

Her books are mainly non-fiction. They have reached and brought healing to many.

Her newest adventure is writing fiction. She allowed me to take a peek behind the scenes of the draft. I didn't want to quit reading! I think you'll love what's ahead. I'll keep you posted.

When you get a chance, check out her website. You'll be pleased to find that not only is Donalyn a writer, and speaker, but also an artist. Go to the products page for more details. I love her greeting cards. She's left the inside blank so you can pen your own thoughts. I like that.

Looking behind the eyes of published authors can often give us fresh ideas on how to add punch to our writing skills. We need all the help we can get, right?

My ever faithful friend, Charl, once again sent me an email about a book that I can't pass up sharing with you. This book is based on fiction. As you know, my focus is usually non-fiction. Take This Book 4 the Wk of 8/3

The Lion of Wall Street by Jack Dreyfus is a fascinating read. He is a fascinating man. I found his auto quite a few years back and began to use it in my workshop. I use it every semester as a tool when we are discussing possible ways to begin our stories.

For sure, Jack's is one of the most creative I've come across. I have read it over and over, and never tire of looking forward to reading it again. Try it, you might like it!

Take This Book 4 the Wks of 7/27-8/3

The following was sent to me from a close friend and avid reader. I thought it would be a great book to recommend even though I have not read it. However, I have been reading articles about Mr. Pausch. Maybe you have, too. Regardless, this is a good one to check out at your local library. Or go to Half Price Books or Amazon. Too, maybe borrow it from a friend!

Here's what my friend Charl shared:
I bought a copy of the Last Lecture at Half Price yesterday by Randy Pausch..47 yr old who died last week. I'm sure u have heard or read on Internet about him..his life left to live out his dreams..for his children..his wonderful attitude. My friend and I are considering reading it and writing insights for our g/children from the chapters.

Also, when you go to
www.amazon.com and look up the book, they have a video of Randy for you to view. Great stuff. Go take a look and live life more fully like my friend, Charl, inspires me to do.

Take This Story 4 the week of 7/13

Up From Slavery by Booker T. Washington is a fascinating travel through the eyes of Booker T. as a boy, as a slave, as a free man, and most of all a man.

Seldom does a book keep me spellbound. This one took me there and back. I would read it all over again.

For sure this book became my friend. As did Mr. Washington. He is one person I would love to sit down and have a conversation with over a cold glass of lemonade.

While this was written many years ago, its every word rings true in the 21st Century. He was indeed a visionary, a believer that things can and do change. He believed in the possibility of people being those change agents. And he was one.

I highly recommend this on your journey while reading about American history.

Published first: 1901 with Doubleday
My copy is from Random House 1993 (232 pp)

Take This Story, Launches

If you notice, I have added a bookshelf on http://www.thewriteplacejust4u.com/ . It's on the left
side-bar. You are only one click away from taking a peek. Check it out!

I will be highlighting an author and book every week on this site called Take This Story. Most of the time it will be an autobiography or biography.

Please know that there will be times you may wonder why I recommended a certain book. All of life surrounds us with people and things we don't agree with, but that doesn't stop us from learning. Recommending doesn't always mean endorsing a lifestyle or a belief system. Hope you enjoy, so stay tuned.

This week I want to introduce you to Goldie Hawn, as if you didn't already know who this gal is. We remember her well from Laugh In. She was quite an airhead. In real life? NOT.

She is a brilliant woman. I saw her in person less than a year ago. She is still quite the looker. Beautiful. Unique. She is naturally gifted with humor. Yet, she is able to blend it with the serious side of life. Now that makes for a great speaker. I could have listened to her for hours.

The title of her autobiography is Goldie a lotus grows in the mud . A thought provoking title, wouldn't you say? Remember, we love catchy titles. There are great photo shots sprinkled throughout her story. And her sense of humor dances from beginning to end. Don't let that fool you. Goldie doesn't hold back. She shares her soul with the reader. I think you will come away refreshed and with a different view of this timeless lady.

Check it out at your local library. If you go to the D'ville library, I'm sure Mary Ellen will be glad to help you! Tell her I sent you.

Or if you want it for keeps, like I do, go to http://www.amazon.com/. Also you might want to check it out at Half Price Books.

Beam me up, Scotty

Captain Kirk has written an autobiography, Up Til Now. Can you believe he is 77 years young? Wow. Either he uses botox or all of his space travels served him well.

AKA known as William Shatner.

In a Dallas Morning News (6/14/08) article he says, This is a good opportunity to write something that was in effect a legacy for my children and grandchildren and to give them a taste of what my life was about.

Sounds like he's been to one of my workshops! I'd like to think.

He has written a few other books over the years. You might want to check those out as well.

I noticed one book written ABOUT him was titled, Dr. Quirk. hummm.
